Momentum plays host to 24 rural students

Momentum Group has hosted 24 students from Gulargambone Central School, giving them unique insight into career paths available in media.

Students from Gulargambone Central visited Momentum Media to learn about career opportunities in media.

Gulargambone is a rural town located in Central West NSW with a population of around 500 people.

Late last month, the town’s local school, Gulargambone Central, embarked on an excursion visiting different workplaces across the Central Coast and Sydney, giving students an opportunity to learn about career opportunities across a range of industries.

Momentum Group welcomed the 24 students to its Sydney-office on Tuesday, 29 March, where they were taken on a tour of the group’s two levels and given a presentation from key figureheads across the group’s editorial, commercial, digital and research departments.

Head teacher Bruce Burge, along with students Bailey and Ella Wykes and Tully Andrews, then appeared on the Momentum Leaders podcast, hosted by managing editor, Emma Ryan.

“We have a school of about 75 kids, 25 of which are in secondary and we have a very strong focus on careers at the moment,” Mr Burge said.

“Our school has now got to the point where we can start challenging them a little bit more, opening their eyes up to the opportunities that are out there and that's a big part of the reason why we're in Sydney today.”

Commenting further, Mr Burge noted the importance of work experience for students both now and in the future, in addition to opening students’ minds up to opportunities outside their comfort zone.

“From a careers point of view, we have to get the kids prepared for work experience. We're always looking out for opportunities for school-based apprenticeships.

“The critical constraint we have at Gular is our kids have a very skinny idea of what opportunities are out there. Today, we're seeing a multitude of careers that I don't think the kids ever even considered or even know exist.

“Walking into a beautiful office at Momentum, seeing you guys and what you do, and the technology that you use, I think it's going to open a lot of eyes on this trip, amongst other things.”

Momentum Media managing editor Emma Ryan thanked the students and teachers for visiting the Sydney office.

“It was great to see so many students bustling about the office in what’s such an eye-opening experience,” she said.

“Highlighting career pathways is such an integral part of the work we do at Momentum Group and it’s fantastic to be able to showcase this at a school level.

“We thank the students and teachers for their visit and hope to see them again soon.”
